Give for a pain-free life!

Bone fractures are commonplace. It is estimated that there are about 175,000 bone fractures per year in the Netherlands. They often heal through plaster cast treatment or surgery. In 10% of cases, the bone does not heal. There are serious consequences for these patients, as they can no longer use the injured limbs, and this significantly reduces their quality of life.

Innovation in natural recovery

Research has led to the development of implant structures that fill fractures naturally. This is done using CT scans of the fracture and of healthy bones. Stem cells from bone marrow are used in combination with certain growth factors. This unique therapy aims to help patients regain normal function and be pain free. However, additional research is needed to improve the quality of the stem cells and the application of the growth factors.

About the researcher

Martijn van Griensven is professor of Regenerative Medicine at Maastricht University (UM). He studied biomedical sciences at Leiden University, obtained his PhD at Hannover Medical School and became the youngest professor in Germany. His focus within regenerative medicine is on the regeneration of the musculoskeletal system. ‘We strive to apply knowledge of cellular interactions and biomaterials for the benefit of our patients!’

Science as charity

UM has been committed to research and education for the last 46 years. And the University Fund Limburg/SWOL is happy to help UM in this endeavour. Following a national awareness campaign, all of the university funds in the Netherlands have joined forces to bring increased attention to the importance of scientific research for a healthy and sustainable society. During this campaign we aim to promote 2 strategic and societal relevant health projects. We really need your contribution. Can we count on you? Click here to go to our other campaign project.
