Imagine a society where every talent can fully flourish. Where brilliant ideas are not held back by invisible barriers, but are given the space to grow into solutions with real societal impact. This is the ambition behind the Impact Beyond Gender program — an initiative from the Knowledge Transfer Office that supports researchers from underrepresented groups, such as women and LGBTQ+ individuals, in translating their knowledge and innovative potential into solutions that advance our region, economy, and society.

Research shows that underrepresented groups consistently receive fewer opportunities to valorize their work. Their projects are less frequently included in patents, they are less involved in spin-offs, and start-ups led by these groups receive only a fraction of available venture capital. This limits personal growth and results in the loss of talented individuals who could strengthen the innovation ecosystem.

Impact Beyond Gender breaks these patterns by raising awareness and providing concrete support. The program includes the annual Impact Beyond Gender Award and workshops, focusing on projects from MUMC+ and the Brightlands campuses with both commercial and societal potential. A key aspect is the use of inclusive innovation practices, such as multidisciplinary teams, participatory design, and responsible data use.

Winners receive funding, mentoring, and coaching to further develop their ideas into solutions that truly make an impact. This creates inspiring role models, a more diverse innovation pipeline, and a society where the full potential of talent is realized.

Will you help us unlock this potential? Support researchers who aim to apply innovation for the benefit of society.
