Give to...a better life for diabetes patients

In the Netherlands, 100,000 people have type 1 diabetes. It is a life-threatening condition. Patients must continually self-inject insulin or wear a pump. This is time-consuming, stressful and painful. One solution to this is implants. UM is working on a unique implant that is made up of the patient’s own cells, which will make insulin use unnecessary. This ensures optimal integration with the body and greatly improves quality of life. Funding is needed to further develop this implant. Will you contribute, too?

About project owner Aart van Apeldoorn
Aart van Apeldoorn is a diabetes scientist and senior lecturer at the MERLN Institute for Technology Inspired Regenerative Medicine at Maastricht University. He is developing a custom-made implant made of extremely thin synthetic material, in order to be able to implant insulin-producing cells efficiently. In this way, a new insulin-producing pancreas is obtained, as it were. Aart van Apeldoorn: "For example, we are investigating how many beta cells need to be added in the artificial organ. How does sugar go in and are the beta cells stimulated to the right amount of insulin release? And at which pace does this take place?"
