Brain injury can happen to anyone. An accident, a brain hemorrhage, or a resuscitation—within a fraction of a second, life can change completely. The brain can suddenly become severely damaged, with enormous consequences for the patient and those around them.
Each year, around 130,000 people in the Netherlands suffer a brain injury. In the intensive care unit of Maastricht UMC+, patients fight for their lives every day. Despite all the dedication and modern medical care, more than 60% of them leave the hospital with a permanent, severe disability. And yet, for over 25 years, there has been little progress in the treatment of severe traumatic brain injury. That needs to change.
We believe a breakthrough is possible—through research, innovation, and your support. Help us improve care for people with brain injuries and bring new hope to patients and their families.

HersenStrijd Fund – for better treatment of brain injury
With the support of donors, the HersenStrijd Fund finances groundbreaking research at Maastricht University and MUMC+ to improve brain blood flow regulation, allowing more brain cells to recover in intensive care. The more cells that heal, the lower the chance of permanent disability—resulting in a significant improvement in quality of life.In addition, the fund conducts many awareness campaigns focused on bicycle safety. The HersenStrijd Fund is a Named Fund within the Limburg University Fund, the charitable foundation (ANBI) of Maastricht University.
“Due to the increase in cardiovascular diseases and serious accidents, even more people will be admitted to the ICU with brain injuries in the coming years. Seeing the impact this has on patients and their families, it’s truly time for action.”— Marcel Ariës, founder of the HersenStrijd Fund and neuro-intensivist at MUMC+.
