Into the world: make birth safe and beautiful!
How did your journey begin? What is your birth story? For many people birth is a beautiful experience and treasured memory. However, this is not always the case. Each day 830 people die during or soon after giving birth. Many are left with traumatic memories. Especially for pregnant people in low-income countries getting professional care can be scary and inaccessible, because their local cultural wishes and needs regarding birth are often not respected in the health care system.
‘Birth is the beginning of every life. Yet every life begins so differently. And everyone deserves our attention and care.’ - Maddalena
Contribute to better health care
Maddalena Giacomozzi, student at the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences of Maastricht University, would like to research local birth cultures and their implications within an intersectional feminist framework. Besides her study, she has been active as feminist and queer activist, being the founder and event coordinator of LadyFest Maastricht since 2015. She now aims to research how the lack of a cross-cultural approach in health care leads to a high maternal mortality rate, discrimination and increased health care costs. Therefore, the goal of this research is to initiate a shift towards a more community-based health care across the world. Maddalena will also present the results to policy makers, people working in the health care system, patient’s organisations, feminist collectives, peer students, etc.
Help Maddalena raise the €1500 to start this project and make maternal health care accessible and safe to empower people and their communities!
